Prevention Time Spring Auction 2020 for South Africa AIDS relief

Spring Auction 2020

Saturday, May 2, 2020, 6:30 pm
Sacajawea Middle School Gym
1141 South Dash Point Road
Federal Way, WA

Our spring auction will be held on Saturday, May 2, at Sacajawea Middle School in Federal Way. We offer a variety of items donated by the community, including restaurant and retail gift cards. Individuals also donate bakery items, plants, baskets and many other interesting things! (Donations need to be new items.) There is something for men, women, and children. It's a great place to pick up something for Mother's Day, Father's Day, birthdays, anniversaries and anything else you'd like to celebrate. You can also find something just for yourself to enjoy!

The auction is always held the Saturday before Mother's Day weekend so this year it will be on Saturday, May 2. Admission and refreshments are free, dress is casual, and kids are welcome. Everything is auctioned by silent bid so you are under no pressure to buy something.

Please put this fun event on your calendar now. All proceeds will again help support Reach4Life (AIDS prevention and youth development) and Khayelisha Care (care for orphans and vulnerable children).

We hope to see you there!

2020 Prevention Time Garage Sale

Summer Garage Sale 2020

June 15-20, 2020
Sacajawea Middle School Cafeteria
1141 South Dash Point Road
Federal Way, WA

Our annual garage sale will be held at Sacajawea Middle School the week of June 15-20 (Monday through Friday). We will set up on Monday and Tuesday and hold the sale from Wednesday through Saturday. This is a huge sale that fully fills the school cafeteria, so there is always something for everyone. We have a lot of clothes in addition to non-clothing items like housewares, toys, sports equipment, books, etc. We ask donors to please sort out the "usable" clothing from the "recycle" clothing prior to bringing them to us. If you have extra hangers, please feel free to leave the clothes on the hangers since we hang a lot of the clothes on racks. We also request that people hold their non-clothing items until the week of the sale, and bring them directly to the school so that we can immediately put things where they need to go.

Last year we  raised $6,835 from the sale. Leftover clothing begins our clothing drive, which lasts through the summer.  All proceeds will fund the Reach4Life AIDS prevention and youth development program in South Africa, Swaziland, Mozambique and Lesotho.

Watch this space for updates, since the dates may slide a bit if the school needs to make up snow days at the end of the year.

Prevention Time 2020 Clothing Drive

Summer Clothing Drive 2020

May 15 through September 30, 2020
30020 2nd Court South
Federal Way, WA

We will hold our annual clothing drive again this summer. We don't send clothes to Africa (that would be too expensive), but we partner with a clothing recycler who works with charities. What we receive is based on weight (certain amount per pound of clothing). We will again be collecting  the following items:

  • Clothes
  • Shoes
  • Purses, belts and backpacks
  • Bedding [no pillows]
  • Fabric
  • Backpacks
  • No decorative pillows
  • No area rugs
  • No stuffed animals

During the drive, smaller contributions can be dropped on the covered porch or call 253-946-5953 to arrange a time to drop off larger amounts. All proceeds will help to fund the Reach4Life AIDS prevention and youth development program in South Africa, Swaziland, Mozambique and Lesotho. Last year, we raised $5,431 from the clothing drive.

Mission Trip 2020

Every other year we take a team of about 15 people from various churches to South Africa during the first two weeks of September, and this year we'll be going from August 28 through September 13. We'll spend time in Johannesburg, Harrismith, and Durban, teaching Reach4Life lessons in classrooms, helping with school assemblies, and visiting places in the community such as orphanages, drug rehabs, and churches. We'll also do home visits to give the team a chance to speak with the local people. Local Peer Educators join us during these activities, and it's always fun to spend time with the learners (students) and program workers.

The team and logistics are put together early in the year, so if you are interested, please send us an email message.

Prevention Time 2019 Spring Auction to help fund HIV/AIDS prograams in Africa

Spring Auction 2019

Saturday, May 4, 2019, 6:30 pm
Sacajawea Middle School Gym
1141 South Dash Point Road
Federal Way, WA

Our spring auction was held on Saturday, May 4, at Sacajawea Middle School in Federal Way. Along with some generous donations, we were able to raise $16,211. We had many items donated by the community, including restaurant and retail gift cards, bakery items, plants, baskets and other items for men, women, and children. For the second year, we also had a Golden Ticket drawing to win a $500 Costco gift card.

We also shared about the two projects we support --- Reach4Life and Khayelisha Care. There has been tremendous growth in the Reach4Life ministry in South Africa, Swaziland, and Mozambique, with over 205,000 kids participating in 2018.

Next year's auction will be held on Saturday, May 2. (It is always held the Saturday before Mother's Day weekend.) Please put this fun event on your calendar now. All proceeds will again help support Reach4Life (AIDS prevention and youth development) and Khayelisha Care (care for orphans and vulnerable children).

We thank everybody who helped prior to and during the auction, and for your financial support. We couldn't do it without you!

Prevention Time 2019 Garage Sale

Summer Garage Sale 2019

June 27—29, 2019
Sacajawea Middle School Cafeteria
1141 South Dash Point Road
Federal Way, WA

Our annual garage sale was held at Sacajawea Middle School on Thursday, June 27, through Saturday, June 29. We set up on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday (June 24-26). In addition to our 30 rack (holding 30' on both sides), we purchased sixteen 5-foot racks, so we could hang more clothes. Many donors helped by sorting out the "usable" clothing from the "recycle" clothing prior to bringing them to us. Some also left their clothes on hangers, which helped since we were hanging more clothes. As requested, people also held their non-clothing items until the week of the sale, and brought them directly to the school so that we could put things out immediately where they needed to go.

We raised $6,134 from the sale and have additional items to put on ebay and Craigslist.

All proceeds will fund the Reach4Life AIDS prevention and youth development program in South Africa, Swaziland, Mozambique.

Prevention Time 2018 Spring Auction to help fund HIV/AIDS prograams in Africa

Summer Garage Sale 2018

Our annual garage sale took place June 28-30. Due to the increasing size of this fun event and the unreliability of the weather, we held the sale at an indoor venue for the first time, Sacajawea Middle School. We didn't have to worry about the weather, there was plenty of parking space, it was on a busy road and easily visible to people passing by, and we could lock the doors at the end of each day. We pre-sorted clothing items ahead of the sale, and asked donors to hold non-clothing items until the two days of set-up. We were thankful so many donations came in then. (The picture above was taken during set-up.)  We thought there would be plenty of room but still had overflow items outside the cafeteria.

We want to thank all of our donors, helpers, shoppers, and those who helped with vehicles. We had over 40 people helping at various times, and many came to help with the clean-up on the last day. We took in $6,201 in sales and have a few more seasonal items to sell on ebay.  All proceeds help to fund the Reach4Life AIDS prevention and youth development program in South Africa, Swaziland, and Mozambique!

People found many treasures and unbeatable bargains!  Next year we will have the garage sale again during the last part of June. Please mark your calendar, and start saving any items you have for donation.

Prevention Time's 2018 Auction

Spring Auction 2018

Saturday, May 5, 2018, 6:30 pm
Sacajawea Middle School Gym
1141 South Dash Point Road
Federal Way, WA

As in the past, our silent auction offered gift cards from popular restaurants and retail stores, along with gift baskets, books, unique items, plants, and bakery goodies. Reach4Life program director Thandeka Mavundla visited from Johannesburg to give us updates on the tremendous growth in the Reach4Life ministry in South Africa, Swaziland, and Mozambique. This informal event was a lot of fun, with something for everybody. The auction takes place the weekend prior to Mother's Day. Please put it on your calendar now for next year! We raised $13,466.08 to support Reach4Life (AIDS prevention and youth development) and Khayelisha Care (care for orphans and vulnerable children).
